Mediazona, working with the BBC's Russian service and a team of volunteers, is maintaining a named list of Russian military personnel killed in the war with Ukraine. The count is compiled from publicly available, verifiable sources such as cemeteries, memorial pages and official announcements, offering one of the few independently confirmed pictures of Russia's casualties, since official figures remain undisclosed.
Why now: The ongoing war in Ukraine keeps attention on casualty figures, and independently verified named lists are rare and widely shared.
