French police have detained more than 6,800 people since high school student protests began in mid-September, according to the country's Ministry of Justice. Of those detained, 86% are minors. The figures highlight the scale of the wave of demonstrations and are drawing attention to how authorities have handled underage protesters.

Why now: The unusually large number of detained minors in the protests is striking and raises concerns about policing of underage demonstrators.
