Saint Patrick's Battalion immigration play debuts in Brownsville
Original: ‘Immigration Songs’: Saint Patrick’s Battalion play debuts in Brownsville
A new play titled 'Immigration Songs', centered on the Saint Patrick's Battalion, has debuted in Brownsville, Texas. The production draws on the story of Irish and other immigrant soldiers who fought for Mexico in the Mexican-American War, using music to connect that history to today's immigration debates. Local audiences in the border city are engaging with the work as immigration remains a charged political topic.
Why now: Immigration is a hot-button issue in the US, and the play's border-city premiere links history to the current debate.
