Climate change is reshaping ecosystems, conservation goals questioned
Original: Climate change drives new species combinations, prompting calls to rethink conservation goals
Scientists report that climate change is driving new combinations of species as plants and animals shift ranges into areas they never shared before. This is prompting calls to rethink conservation goals, which have traditionally focused on preserving historic ecosystems. Experts argue protected-area planning may need to adapt to these novel ecological communities rather than trying to restore past conditions.
Why now: New research highlights how shifting species ranges challenge long-standing conservation strategies.
