Former scout reflects on Shintaro Fujinami's struggles

Original: 藤浪晋太郎

Japanese pitcher Shintaro Fujinami has been the subject of discussion after being designated for assignment. Sports writer Masahiko Abe, recalling a veteran scout's early assessment, notes the doubt that followed Fujinami from his high school days: whether he would become a remarkable pitcher or falter somewhere along the way. The commentary retraces his career from Hanshin Tigers star to his difficulties in the major leagues.

Why now: News of Fujinami being dropped from a major league roster has prompted reflection in Japan on why a once-hyped pitching prospect has struggled.
