Stars and Stripes held up as model of government-funded journalism
Original: Stars and Stripes shows how government‑funded journalism can work – if it’s free to report the truth
Stars and Stripes, the US military's independently edited newspaper, is being cited as an example of how state-funded journalism can serve the public when editors are free to report without government interference. Commentary argues its editorial independence is the key condition that makes publicly funded news credible, and a warning for outlets where that independence is eroded.
Why now: Ongoing debates over the credibility and independence of government-funded media have renewed attention to Stars and Stripes as a successful example.
