Operation KillSwitch targets KillSec ransomware crew
Original: Operation KillSwitch (30 Sep), retold with low-poly potatoes 🥔 KillSec: 2023 defacement crew → RaaS from June 2024. $250
An international operation dubbed KillSwitch, announced 30 September, is said to have dismantled the KillSec ransomware group, which evolved from a 2023 defacement crew into a ransomware-as-a-service outfit from June 2024. KillSec allegedly charged a $250 affiliate fee with an 88/12 revenue split, ran a leak site, used AI to build infrastructure and pick targets, carried out around 500 attacks including roughly 70 in Germany, and stole over 110 TB of data.
Why now: The group's use of AI and its scale of attacks make the takedown a striking cybersecurity story.
