Construction is underway for AmazonFACE, a decade-long experiment in the Amazon rainforest that will pump elevated levels of carbon dioxide over plots of forest marked by large rings of towers. Set to launch in the coming months, the project aims to reveal how the world's largest rainforest might respond to future atmospheric CO2, testing whether it will keep absorbing carbon or reach a tipping point.

Why now: The launch of a first-of-its-kind experiment with major implications for climate modelling and Amazon tipping-point concerns has drawn attention.
