Salvadoran bishops ask Pope Leo to name Romero a Doctor of the Church
Original: Bishops of El Salvador ask Pope Leo to proclaim Saint Óscar Romero a Doctor of the Church
The bishops of El Salvador have formally requested that Pope Leo proclaim Saint Óscar Romero a Doctor of the Church. Romero, the archbishop of San Salvador assassinated in 1980 while celebrating Mass, was canonised in 2018 and remains a leading figure for the Church in Latin America. The designation, honouring saints of exceptional theological contribution, would place him among a small and distinguished group of church teachers.
Why now: The petition to a newly elected pope raises the prospect of a major new recognition for one of Latin America's most revered modern saints.
