Donald Trump has announced a deal for the United States to purchase Russian diesel, saying the move is essential to lower US fuel prices. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reacted furiously, and the purchase is set to create a fresh crisis with Ukraine and NATO allies, who have spent years trying to cut off Russian energy revenues funding the war.
Why now: The deal directly contradicts Western sanctions policy on Russian energy and angers a key US ally at a sensitive point in the war.
