Series of fatal incidents disrupts JR Joban Line services

Original: 常磐線 人身事故

Multiple people have been struck by trains on the JR Joban Line in Ibaraki Prefecture in recent days. A man died after being hit at Akatsuka Station in Mito, while another man was left critically injured at Tsuchiura Station, temporarily suspending services. Police in Takahagi also identified a high school girl from Kitaibaraki who died in a separate incident. Services have since resumed, but the line has recorded six fatal incidents this year.

Why now: A cluster of fatal train accidents within days on the same busy commuter line has drawn widespread public attention in Japan.
