Governor Kathy Hochul announced that New York will opt in to the federal school choice program created under President Trump. The decision means New York families and schools would be able to participate in the national program, a notable step for a state that has often resisted the administration's education policies. The announcement is drawing attention from education and political observers.

Why now: A Democratic-led state deciding to join a signature Trump education program is surprising and politically significant news.
