Trump Urges AI to Boost Science While Cutting Research Funds
Original: Trump Calls on AI to Speed Up Science–While Continuing to Defund It
President Trump is calling for artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific discovery, even as his administration continues cutting funding for scientific research agencies and grants. Critics say the two positions are contradictory, arguing that AI-driven breakthroughs depend on the basic research workforce and infrastructure his budgets are defunding, and the tension is drawing attention in science and policy circles.
Why now: The contradiction between promoting AI for science and defunding research is drawing criticism.
