What does "science as a service" mean for space policy?
Original: Space Policy Edition: What does “science as a service” really mean?
The Planetary Society's Space Policy Edition takes up the question of what "science as a service" really means, examining a growing framing in which scientific research, data and expertise are treated as deliverables purchased by government or industry rather than as public goods funded outright. The discussion probes whether this model changes priorities, accountability and access in space science, and what it could mean for agencies and researchers who depend on stable public investment.
Why now: Debates over commercialisation and funding models for publicly supported science are currently active in space policy circles.
