A Massachusetts dairy farmer came close to selling an 11-acre portion of his land that cannot be farmed to Walmart, but instead chose to keep the parcel and install a solar array on it. The story highlights how farmers with unusable fields are weighing offers from large retailers against renewable energy projects that let them keep ownership of their land while generating income.
Why now: The choice between selling to a major retailer and adopting solar energy has drawn attention as an example of land-use and renewable energy debates.
