Discussion is building around the European Union stepping back from WhatsApp in favor of European-made alternatives to major US tech platforms. Commenters frame it as part of a wider push for digital sovereignty, arguing the EU wants messaging tools less dependent on American big tech. The conversation links the messaging shift to broader efforts to grow European technology alternatives.
Why now: Ongoing EU push for digital sovereignty and reducing reliance on US tech platforms is drawing attention to alternatives to WhatsApp.
