Ancient Genetic Event May Explain Octopus Intelligence
Original: Scientists Discover Ancient Genetic Shake-Up That May Explain the Extraordinary Intelligence of Octopuses
Scientists report the discovery of an ancient genetic change that could help explain why octopuses are extraordinarily intelligent. The finding suggests the remarkable cognitive abilities of these cephalopods may trace back to a major evolutionary shift in their genome long ago. Researchers say the event may underpin the unique neural complexity that sets octopuses apart from other invertebrates.
Why now: New research offers a possible evolutionary explanation for octopus intelligence, a topic of broad scientific curiosity.
