Wildfires in Indonesia threaten orangutans, rescuers find injured animals
Original: Wildfires threaten Indonesia's orangutans as rescuers find injured animals
Forest fires burning in Indonesia are putting orangutan populations at risk, with rescue teams reporting they have found injured animals in affected areas. The blazes are destroying critical rainforest habitat on Borneo and Sumatra, forcing orangutans to flee or become trapped. Conservation groups say injured and displaced apes are being treated as firefighters and rescuers work to contain the fires, which often follow land-clearing during dry conditions.
Why now: Fires are an annual crisis in Indonesia, but reports of injured orangutans are drawing fresh international concern about wildlife and habitat loss.
