Pope Leo rejects the death penalty
Original: Pope Leo rejects death penalty
Pope Leo has rejected the death penalty, restating the Catholic Church's position that capital punishment is inadmissible in the modern era. The statement is drawing attention online, with many reading it as a continuation of the Vatican's long-standing opposition to executions and a signal of how the new pontiff will address life-issues going forward.
Why now: A new pope reaffirming a high-profile moral stance naturally draws global debate about the Church's direction under his leadership.
