Sudan church built around giant carving of possible Kushite ruler
Original: A Christian church in Sudan was built around a giant carving of a possible Kushite ruler
A medieval Christian church in Sudan was constructed encasing a massive carved figure believed to depict a ruler of the ancient Kingdom of Kush. Archaeologists say the carving, likely originally part of a Kushite royal monument, was preserved rather than destroyed when the church was built around it, offering rare insight into how successive civilizations in the region reused and revered older monuments.
Why now: The unusual preservation of a pre-Christian royal monument inside a church is a striking archaeological discovery
