USWNT Battles Top-Ranked Spain in Friendly Doubleheader

Original: usa vs spain

The US women's national soccer team faced world number one Spain in a high-profile international friendly as both sides prepare for the Women's World Cup. Spain led 2-0 by halftime in the second match, but goals from Claudia Sanchez and Mallory Swanson — returning after two years away — levelled it at 2-2. Coach Emma Hayes said the teams are 'exactly side-by-side', though commentators note the US has lost its long-held dominance at the top of the women's game.

Why now: The two matches are a key World Cup tune-up pitting the US against the world's top-ranked team, with Swanson's return adding to the interest.
