IceCube Telescope Beneath Antarctic Ice Captures Cosmic Neutrinos
Original: IceCube’s Hidden Lair: Beneath Antarctic Ice, a Cosmic Telescope Captures the Universe
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory, buried deep beneath the ice at the South Pole, uses thousands of sensors spread over a cubic kilometre to detect neutrinos arriving from distant cosmic sources. By watching for the faint flashes these ghostly particles produce in the ice, the detector has traced high-energy neutrinos back to black holes, supernovae and other violent events far beyond our galaxy, opening a new window on the universe.
Why now: Renewed interest in IceCube's unique method of using Antarctic ice to observe the universe through neutrinos rather than light.
