US President Donald Trump said Ukraine needs 'a new leader who can make a deal,' directly criticizing President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Trump faulted Zelenskiy for continuing to strike Russian oil refineries, arguing the attacks undermine prospects for a negotiated settlement to the war. The remarks sharpen tensions between Washington and Kyiv over how to end the conflict with Russia.
Why now: The US president publicly faulting a wartime ally's leadership and military strikes is a significant diplomatic development.
