Australian man faces prison for contacting MP over Gaza

An Australian man identified as Mackell has reportedly been charged for emailing and phoning his local federal MP about Israel's war in Gaza, and is representing himself at trial, likely to be held next year. Critics say the case shows heavy-handed limits on Australians' right to petition their elected representatives, with commentators jokingly questioning the state of Australian democracy.

Why now: A trial for allegedly 'annoying' an MP over Gaza raises free speech concerns amid intense debate over the war.
