Mamdani's childcare plan meets preference for home care
Original: childcare
New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is pushing an ambitious childcare agenda, but reporting highlights a cultural obstacle: many families, particularly in some immigrant communities, prefer keeping babies at home with a parent or relative rather than using formal childcare. The tension raises questions about how much demand exists for expanded public childcare programs, and whether uptake will match the policy's scale.
Why now: A high-profile signature policy of the incoming New York mayor is being scrutinised as families weigh it against traditional home care preferences.
