A Japanese sports article explains an unwritten rule of Major League Baseball: pitchers who hit a batter with a pitch do not apologize, a custom that strikes Japanese fans as unthinkable. The reasoning is that apologizing could be seen as admitting the pitch was intentional, which would escalate tensions and invite retaliation, so pitchers stay silent even after accidental hit-by-pitches.

Why now: The cultural contrast between Japanese baseball etiquette and MLB norms is drawing interest among Japanese sports fans.
