Why Your Dishwasher Is Not a Robot
Original: "Robot" Is a Social Construct: Why Your Dishwasher Is Not a Robot
A new essay argues that 'robot' is a social construct rather than a technical category, explaining why machines like dishwashers are excluded from the label even though they perform automated work. The piece examines how culture, not engineering, determines which machines people call robots, and the argument has prompted debate among robotics enthusiasts about where the boundary should lie.
Why now: It makes a provocative claim about a familiar word that invites people to argue over what really counts as a robot.
