Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic congressional candidate in New York, criticized ICE's presence in the city, calling it "deeply concerning." Her remarks come amid protests and scrutiny of immigration enforcement, including reference to a police shooting connected to demonstrations over ICE operations. The comments add to ongoing debate over the role of federal immigration agents in New York and cooperation with local police.
Why now: Immigration enforcement in Democratic-led cities is a heated political issue, and a congressional candidate speaking out draws attention.
