Far-right candidate in Brazil leads in deforestation hotspots
Original: "Brazil far-right presidential candidate wins most votes in deforestation hotspots" # Brazil # Deforestation # Trees # E
A Brazil far-right presidential candidate won the most votes in areas of the Amazon and other regions with the highest deforestation rates, according to a Mongabay report. The finding highlights a political divide over environmental policy, with voters in forest-clearing frontiers favouring the candidate despite concern among conservationists about the future of the rainforest.
Why now: The link between voting patterns and deforestation raises concerns about the political future of Amazon protection efforts.
