Original: Protesters seeking India election chief's ouster detained, as 'cockroach' leaders released
Indian police detained protesters calling for the removal of the country's chief election commissioner, while several opposition figures who had been held were released. The figures, reportedly insulted with the word 'cockroach' by officials, drew attention to rising political tension ahead of elections, with critics accusing authorities of heavy-handed treatment of dissent.
Why now: Fresh clashes between police and protesters over the election chief have raised concerns about the independence of India's election machinery.
