France is facing mounting controversy over its police handling of student protests that have lasted more than two weeks. Nearly 6,900 people, mostly minors, have been arrested, and around 700 police officers are reported affected. Calls are growing to limit the powers of riot police as criticism of the government's crackdown intensifies.

Why now: Widespread arrests of mostly underage students and heavy-handed riot police tactics have sparked public outrage and debate over police powers.
