Zelensky offers elections in exchange for ceasefire
Original: Zelensky offers elections for ceasefire
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has signalled he would be prepared to hold elections if a ceasefire is reached, tying a possible wartime vote to progress toward ending the fighting. The move touches a sensitive question for Kyiv, since martial law has postponed presidential elections during the Russian invasion, and it is drawing debate over whether a vote could be held safely while hostilities continue.
Why now: The proposed link between a ceasefire and elections reignites debate over Ukraine's wartime political future and peace prospects.
