US charges Venezuela's ex-president Maduro with torture

Original: folter

US authorities have filed charges of torture against Venezuela's former president Nicolás Maduro, according to tagesschau. In Germany, Die Rheinpfalz reports on a separate domestic case where a confessed defendant says intimidation escalated into torture. The cases have put the treatment of detainees and accountability for abuse at the centre of public debate in both countries.

Why now: New torture allegations against Maduro and a German court case have drawn fresh attention to state-sanctioned abuse.
