Spiegel story on German migrants in Paraguay draws criticism

Der Spiegel last week published a report portraying the comfortable life of German immigrants in Paraguay. Critics say the article omitted crucial history: the country long served as a refuge for Nazi war criminals and was ruled by Alfredo Stroessner, a dictator of German descent. Commenters are calling out the piece for whitewashing that past.

Why now: A German news magazine's positive portrayal of German emigration to Paraguay is being criticised for ignoring the country's Nazi-era and dictatorial history.
