Atheists argue fear drives religious belief

Original: Theists: Q: What single word best explains the origin and continuation of god-belief? A: FEAR ______________________ # a

A claim circulating online among atheists asserts that a single word — fear — best explains both the origin and the continuation of belief in God. The remark frames religion as rooted in dread of death, the unknown and punishment, and it is drawing agreement from nonbelievers while implicitly inviting pushback from theists who see faith as grounded instead in evidence, experience or meaning.

Why now: Debates over the psychology of religious belief are a perennial flashpoint between atheists and theists on social media.
