Five Palestinians freed from Israeli prisons told Haaretz they lost between 15 and 50 percent of their body weight, were severely beaten and contracted scabies during detention. They described the facilities as "torture camps" operating for three years as "declared policy." The accounts add to growing allegations of systematic mistreatment of Palestinian detainees.
Why now: Fresh first-hand testimony of alleged systematic abuse of Palestinian detainees is renewing scrutiny of conditions in Israeli prisons.
