A widely shared statement in Spain claims that the roughly 209,000 Chinese people living in the country never ask for subsidies, queue at food banks, commit street crime or harass women. The message is framed as praise for the Chinese community's self-reliance, and is being read by many as an implicit comparison with other immigrant groups. It has drawn large engagement and mixed reactions.

Why now: The sweeping contrast with other immigrant communities makes it a lightning rod in Spain's heated immigration debate.

• In Spain, 209,000 Chinese people live. People who have never asked for a subsidy, nor line up at food banks, nor steal cell phones, nor do the mataleón at ATMs, nor bother women on the subway, nor rape them, nor want to impose their customs on you. · harryelsocio · 59K
