US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has arrested more than 8,500 children through July, more than double the number taken into custody over the same period last year. The figures, reported during Donald Trump's second term, point to a sharp escalation in immigration enforcement involving minors, and the data is drawing concern from people questioning the treatment and detention of those children.

Why now: The sharp year-over-year rise in child arrests under the Trump administration's expanded immigration enforcement is prompting alarm and debate.
