US Central Command says American forces disabled a cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman after it attempted to bypass a blockade near the Strait of Hormuz. The incident underscores rising tensions in the strategic waterway, a chokepoint for global oil shipments, and is drawing attention to how far the United States will go to enforce the maritime cordon.
Why now: An active US military operation in the Strait of Hormuz raises fears of escalation in a region critical to global oil supplies.
