WebP adoption sparks fresh debate among web developers
Original: I guess I'm using WebP now?
A Canadian developer's writeup on moving to the WebP image format is drawing attention on Hacker News, ranking in the site's top stories with strong engagement. The piece reflects a wider shift as web publishers weigh WebP's smaller file sizes against long-standing preferences for JPEG and PNG, and it has reignited discussion about image compression trade-offs.
Why now: Developers are actively debating image format choices as WebP becomes a practical default for the web.
