Canadian ransomware negotiator arrested on federal hacking charges
Original: Canadian ransomware negotiator arrested on federal charges amid FBI hacking probe
A Canadian ransomware negotiator has been arrested on federal charges as part of an FBI hacking investigation. The person worked in the niche field of negotiating between ransomware gangs and victims. The arrest has drawn attention because it raises questions about how close those intermediaries may be to the criminal groups they negotiate with, and it comes as US authorities intensify crackdowns on ransomware operations.
Why now: The arrest of someone inside the ransomware negotiation world is an unusual twist in the ongoing US crackdown on cybercrime.
