Proposed Silicon Valley mega data center sparks energy concerns
Original: Proposed mega data center in Silicon Valley raises energy and enĀviĀronĀmental concerns
A proposal for a large-scale data center in Silicon Valley is drawing scrutiny over its expected electricity demand and environmental footprint. The project would add to the region's growing data infrastructure, and critics are questioning whether local power grids and resources can support it while meeting climate goals. Supporters typically cite economic benefits, but opponents are pressing for review of energy use, water consumption and emissions before approval.
Why now: Data centers' surging energy use, driven by AI growth, is a hot environmental debate and the proposal is newly in the news.
