The Rome Public Prosecutor's Office has charged the anti-immigration account RadioGenoa with racism over a tweet it posted with what it calls a purely descriptive caption. The group says the post was neither satire nor a joke, and that its trial begins on Wednesday, calling Italy "a circus". The case has drawn strong attention online, with supporters framing it as a free-speech test and critics welcoming legal scrutiny of inflammatory migration-related content.
Why now: A hate-speech prosecution of a high-profile anti-immigration account starting this Wednesday reignites debate over free speech versus racism law in Italy.
