Maritime rescue saves over 300 migrants off the Canary Islands

Original: canarias

Spain's Maritime Rescue Service has intercepted two cayucos, wooden fishing boats, on the Atlantic migration route to the Canary Islands, bringing more than 300 migrants to safety. The route remains one of the deadliest ways into Europe, and arrivals have kept emergency services and island reception centres under sustained pressure.

Why now: A large rescue on the dangerous Canary migration route draws immediate public attention in Spain.
