Original: Failure to fit tags left 5,000 offenders unmonitored in England and Wales, report finds https://www. theguardian.com/soc
A new report finds that around 5,000 offenders in England and Wales went unmonitored because electronic tags could not be fitted, whether due to equipment shortages, supplier failures or administrative problems. The finding has prompted criticism of the probation service and tagging contractors, with questions raised over public safety and the reliability of community-based sentencing.
Why now: A newly published report on the electronic tagging system has revealed a significant monitoring failure with public safety implications.
