Terry Tao on Illustration Beyond Proof in Mathematics
Original: Illustration Beyond Proof
Mathematician Terence Tao has published a new essay on his blog examining the role of illustration in mathematical work, arguing that images and visual reasoning do work beyond simply supporting formal proofs. The piece is drawing attention from mathematicians and technologists, with readers discussing how visual intuition complements rigorous argument and how this matters for mathematical exposition and communication.
Why now: Tao is one of the world's most prominent mathematicians, and his reflections on visual versus formal reasoning resonate with current debates about intuition, exposition and AI-assisted mathematics.
