Mapping North Korea: the crowdsourced cartography project
Original: Cartographers of North Korea (2019)
An online mapping project documents the geography of North Korea, where detailed public cartographic data has long been scarce. Using satellite imagery and crowdsourced contributions, volunteer mappers trace roads, buildings and infrastructure that official maps omit, offering researchers and the public an unusually detailed view of the isolated country. The project continues to draw attention for making such restricted territory legible to outsiders.
Why now: Readers are revisiting the 2019 project, likely because its detailed picture of secretive North Korea remains rare and compelling.
