Hyderabad's street garbage and stray animals spark criticism
Original: This is Hyderabad, India. The most promising city in the eyes of Hindutva jingoists. Cows, donkeys, pigs eating garbage
Hyderabad, one of India's largest cities, is being criticised over images and descriptions of cows, donkeys and pigs feeding on garbage piles alongside open sewers in its streets. The criticism targets the gap between the city's image as a booming tech hub and the visible sanitation problems on the ground, and is framed as an indictment of civic management in India more broadly.
Why now: Sanitation and stray animal problems in a major Indian city are being used in ongoing political arguments about India's development and governance.
