UN: Burundi Set to Win Human Rights Council Seat Despite Abuses
Human Rights Watch reports that Burundi is on course to secure a seat on the UN Human Rights Council despite its record of serious human rights abuses. The rights group is highlighting the prospect as a blow to the council's credibility, questioning how a country accused of violations can help oversee global human rights standards.
Why now: A rights group is publicly challenging the UN's decision to admit an abusive government to its top human rights body.
