Taiwan closely monitors series of Chinese live-fire drills
Original: Taiwan says it is closely monitoring series of Chinese live-fire drills
Taiwan says it is closely tracking a series of live-fire military drills being carried out by China near the island. The defense ministry says it is watching the exercises and responding to the movements as they happen. The drills come amid continuing tension between Taipei and Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its territory, and follow a pattern of frequent Chinese military activity around the island in recent years.
Why now: Chinese military exercises near Taiwan heighten regional tensions and raise fears of escalation.
